Variable Spark Gaps

Constructed of a single 8' 2X4, two 12" lag bolts and two brass doorknobs, each variable spark gap was built to last.

Solid connections were made between the doorknobs and the bolts via the threaded knob and the two included set screws. Wires were then wrapped and sealed to the lag bolt, insuring a good connection between capacitors and gaps.

The distance between the gaps could be easily altered from less than 1" to over a foot. This allows us to tune our open air gaps for the most effective spark distance in variable conditions.

In the future, we want to have completely enclosed either vacuum or pressurized argon gaps to improve our repeatability.
